About the Role
We are seeking a dedicated Neonatology Specialist to join a leading healthcare facility in Muscat, Oman. This role focuses on delivering advanced medical care to newborn infants, particularly those requiring intensive care in the NICU. The specialist will manage complex neonatal conditions, lead resuscitation efforts, and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure optimal outcomes for high-risk newborns and their families.
Core Responsibilities
- Provide specialized medical care to newborn infants from birth through the first months of life, primarily within the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
- Manage complex neonatal conditions including prematurity, respiratory distress syndrome, sepsis, congenital anomalies, and hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy.
- Perform and supervise advanced procedures: endotracheal intubation, umbilical catheter placement, chest tube insertion, lumbar puncture, and exchange transfusion.
- Lead neonatal resuscitation at deliveries and stabilize critically ill infants for transport or surgical intervention.
- Develop and implement individualized care plans incorporating ventilation strategies, hemodynamic support, nutrition, and neuroprotective measures.
- Collaborate closely with obstetrics, pediatric surgery, cardiology, neurology, and genetics services for coordinated perinatal care.
- Conduct daily rounds, document clinical progress, and communicate effectively with parents regarding prognosis, treatment options, and discharge planning.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives, mortality/morbidity reviews, and evidence-based protocol development.
- Mentor and supervise junior medical staff, residents, and nursing teams in neonatal best practices.
- Maintain compliance with national healthcare regulations, hospital accreditation standards, and infection control protocols.
Required Qualifications
- Medical degree (MBBS or equivalent) from a recognized institution.
- Specialist certification or board eligibility in Neonatology / Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine.
- Valid medical license to practice in Oman (or eligibility for Oman Medical Specialty Board registration).
- Proven clinical experience in a Level III/IV NICU managing high-acuity neonatal cases.
- Proficiency in mechanical ventilation (conventional, HFOV, NAVA), point-of-care ultrasound, and procedural skills.
- Strong command of English; Arabic language proficiency is highly advantageous for patient communication.
Preferred Skills
- Fellowship training in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine from an accredited program.
- Experience with ECMO, therapeutic hypothermia, and advanced neuro-monitoring (aEEG, NIRS).
- Research background with publications in peer-reviewed neonatal journals.
- Leadership experience in NICU management, quality improvement, or medical education.
- Familiarity with electronic medical records (EMR) systems and digital health platforms.
