About the Role
Broco is building the financial infrastructure of francophone Africa, starting where the money already flows — not in traditional bank accounts, but in the supply chains that power everyday commerce. As a Senior Backend Engineer, you will play a critical role in designing, developing, and scaling the backend systems that underpin this next-generation financial platform. This is a high-impact engineering role based in Algiers, Algeria, ideal for a senior developer passionate about fintech, distributed systems, and emerging markets.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, build, and maintain robust, scalable backend services and APIs that support Broco's financial infrastructure platform.
- Architect microservices and data pipelines optimized for high availability and low-latency performance across francophone African markets.
- Collaborate closely with product managers, frontend engineers, and data teams to translate business requirements into reliable technical solutions.
- Implement secure payment processing, transaction management, and financial data handling in compliance with regional regulations.
- Optimize database schemas, query performance, and caching strategies to handle growing transaction volumes.
- Lead code reviews, mentor junior engineers, and establish backend development best practices across the engineering team.
- Monitor system health, troubleshoot production issues, and implement automated alerting and recovery mechanisms.
- Contribute to technical roadmap planning and evaluate new tools, frameworks, and infrastructure solutions.
Required Qualifications
- 5+ years of professional experience in backend software engineering or server-side development.
- Strong proficiency in one or more backend programming languages such as Python, Java, Go, Node.js, or Ruby.
- Deep experience with RESTful API design, microservices architecture, and event-driven systems.
- Solid understanding of relational databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL) and/or NoSQL databases (MongoDB, Redis).
- Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and containerization tools (Docker, Kubernetes).
- Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, version control (Git), and automated testing frameworks.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced startup environment.
- Excellent communication skills in French and/or English; Arabic is a plus.
Preferred Skills
- Prior experience in fintech, payments, or financial services engineering.
- Knowledge of blockchain, mobile money, or digital wallet technologies.
- Experience working with high-throughput, low-latency systems in emerging markets.
- Understanding of data security standards and financial compliance frameworks.
- Exposure to infrastructure-as-code (Terraform, Ansible) and observability tools (Prometheus, Grafana, ELK).
