Role Overview
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Tool & Die Maker III to join our advanced manufacturing team. This senior-level position is responsible for the full lifecycle of precision tooling and die fabrication, including design interpretation, machining, assembly, testing, and maintenance. The ideal candidate brings deep expertise in working with complex tool and die systems and plays a critical role in ensuring production quality, efficiency, and continuous improvement across manufacturing operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Read and interpret complex blueprints, CAD models, and engineering specifications to fabricate precision tools, dies, jigs, and fixtures
- Set up and operate a wide range of machine tools including CNC mills, lathes, surface grinders, EDM machines, and manual machining equipment
- Perform precision machining, fitting, and assembly of tool and die components to exact tolerances
- Conduct thorough testing and tryout of newly fabricated dies and tools to verify functionality and dimensional accuracy
- Diagnose and troubleshoot tooling issues on the production floor, performing repairs and modifications as needed
- Collaborate with engineering, quality assurance, and production teams to optimize tooling designs for manufacturability and performance
- Maintain detailed records of tooling modifications, repairs, and maintenance schedules
- Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior tool and die makers and apprentices
- Ensure all work complies with safety standards, company procedures, and industry regulations
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to reduce downtime, improve tool life, and enhance production efficiency
Required Qualifications
- Proven experience as a Tool & Die Maker, with progressive responsibility at a senior or Level III capacity
- Strong proficiency in reading and interpreting complex engineering drawings and GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing)
- Expert-level skills in operating CNC and conventional machining equipment including mills, lathes, grinders, and EDM
- Deep knowledge of metallurgy, heat treatment processes, and material properties relevant to tooling applications
- Ability to work with extremely tight tolerances (within ±0.0005 inches or better)
- Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities in a fast-paced manufacturing environment
- Excellent manual dexterity and attention to detail
- Knowledge of workplace safety standards and best practices in a manufacturing setting
Preferred Qualifications
- Certification or formal apprenticeship completion in Tool & Die Making or a related precision machining trade
- Experience with CAD/CAM software for tool design and CNC programming
- Familiarity with progressive, transfer, and compound die systems
- Experience in high-volume stamping or injection molding environments
- Lean manufacturing or Six Sigma training and experience
- Strong communication skills with the ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams
